Excursions on the Jostedalsbreen glacier:
Lodalskåpa, 2,083 metres
The hike takes between 10 and 12 hours. On the
approach up the valley to Fessene (“the two
waterfalls”), you pass many moraines; the most
pronounced being the terminal moraine deposited
during the Little Ice Age in 1750, running in an
arc across the whole valley. We climb up
alongside the Fessene falls and enter a side
valley. Brattbakkene (“the steep slopes”) start
at the head of this side valley. After about
four hours we reach the glacier plateau,
Bohrsbreen, at an altitude of around 1,700
metres. We stop for about an hour to eat our
packed lunch, then cross the Bohrsbreen glacier
on a rope before ascending to the subsidiary
summit of Veslekåpa, and from there, again roped
together, to the foot of Lodalskåpa, or “Kåpa”
for short. We reach the summit cairn at 2,083
metres six or seven hours after starting and can
enjoy the magnificent view over the whole of
Jostedalsbreen, the biggest glacier in mainland
Europe.
To the north you can see the
Skridulaupen range, to the west the famous Mount
Skåla, and to the east the jagged peaks of the
Hurrungane range including Fannaråken, another
popular summit. You look straight down on
Småttene, the icefall that descends east of
Lodalskåpa. On the icecap itself, you can see
Brenibba and Høgste Breakulen (the highest snow
point on the glacier).
Times and meeting points must be arranged with
the mountain and glacier guide.
Briksdal Breføring A.S organises guided hikes to
Lodalskåpa on request.
Fjærland – Briksdal
You stay overnight at Flatbrehytta cabin above
Fjærland the evening before; this cabin must be
booked well in advance. Early next morning, you
start the hike over the Jostedalsbreen glacier
to Briksdal. En route, there are magnificent
views of many famous mountain summits in the
Jostedalsbreen National Park and the surrounding
ranges. The hike over to Briksdal, one of the
classic routes across the Jostedalsbreen glacier,
takes between 12 and 14 hours. The descent to
the Briksdal valley goes via the Slingsby Cairn
– named after the English mountaineering pioneer
William Cecil Slingsby – and Kattanakken, which
commands the best of all views of the valley and
the surrounding glaciers.
The season for this trip is early summer.
Times and meeting points must be arranged with
the mountain and glacier guide.
